The program is being extended once again until December 31, 2010, or the date that 10,000 applications have been accorded special status for examination under the Patent Application Backlog Reduction Stimulus Plan, whichever occurs earlier.

The USPTO is also expanding the program to permit all applicants to participate by eliminating the small entity status requirement and adding a few new requirements in view of the expansion. The most notable of which is that the applicant must also include a statement that they have not and will not file a new application that claims the same invention claimed in the expressly abandoned application (the phrase ‘‘same invention’’ has the same meaning as used in the context of statutory double patenting under 35 U.S.C. 101).

That's an interesting article. I think maybe the biggest difference is constructive pessimism vs. white-flag pessimism. It's one thing to anticipate the worst and envision the problems that you will run into, but it's another altogether to see these problems and give up with a "that's impossible" attitude. Hence your comment about persistence.

Great article Brian, it got me to thinking, can you wear a pessimist hat one day and a optimist hat the next? Can one person be both or is it inherently impossible?

This article further breaks things down and is interesting:
http://www.leadership-and-motivation-training.com/optimism-vs-pessimism.html

One of the points that it makes that I think is interesting and rings true to me is, whether you are a pessimist or a optimist, persistence pays off.
