HELP WITH BIODESIGN APPLICATION SCREENING
The Biodesign Faculty are looking for alumni to help with applicant screening in the upcoming application cycle. This is a rewarding way to give back to Biodesign and provides interesting insight into the selection process. Please contact Beverly Tang (btangy@stanford.edu) if you are interested in participating.

MEDTECH IDOL AT THE WSGR MEDICAL DEVICE CONFERENCE
Applications are now being accepted from Medtech startup companies for an opportunity to present at the First Annual Medtech Idol pitch session.  For those interested in applying, please submit an application at medtechidol.com.

The Medtech Idol pitch session, hosted by RCT Ventures, will be held on June 19, 2013 at the WSGR Medical Device Conference at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco.  Four companies selected by a panel of investors will present at the conference, and this panel of investors will give feedback to each of the presenting companies. In addition, the audience will vote electronically for the most outstanding Medtech Business Opportunity.  The winner will receive recognition at an awards ceremony during the conference. They will also get a presenting slot at an upcoming IN3 Medical Device conference, and they will be profiled in an upcoming issue of Elsevier’s monthly magazine START-UP: The Review of Emerging Medical Ventures.

Policy Changes that Affect You

OBAMA’S BUDGET PROPOSAL
The budget provides $80 billion in discretionary funding for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is $3.9 billion above the level enacted in 2012. Specifically, this budget requests approximately $870 million for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). The request for an 11% increase in CDRH’s budget stems from the Center’s desire to meet negotiated benchmarks as a part of the MDUFA III reauthorization. CDRH says that the request for an increase in funding will go towards staffing 80 new full-time employees in an attempt to, among other things, increase review time for 510(k)s and PMAs.
TAVENNER POISED TO HEAD CMS

Following a hearing in the Senate Finance Committee this week, Acting Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Marilyn Tavenner seems to be on the cusp of becoming the first CMS chief to be confirmed by the Senate since 2006. Tavenner has been running CMS for over a year now, and has enjoyed high praise from Members like House Majority leader Eric Cantor (VA). Even prior to her confirmation hearing this week, reports began to circulate about her expected confirmation. Senator Max Baucus (MT), who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, said he hoped to hold a vote on Tavenner’s confirmation at the end of April. MED DEVICE TAX REPEAL GETS MAJORITY CO-SPONSORSHIP IN THE HOUSE

Congressman Eric Paulsen’s (MN) bill, H.R.523, “Protect Medical Innovation Act of 2013,” hit the majority threshold of 218 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. This guarantees enough support for the bill to pass the House of Representatives.
