MedtechWomen (http://medtechwomen.org/) is an organization bringing talented women together and highlighting female medtech leaders. On February 13th 2013, fifteen Biodesign fellows and alumni had the chance to meet with three of the organization’s leaders — Amy Belt, MBA (Director, Covidien Ventures), Deb Kilpatrick, PhD (Chief Commercial Officer, CardioDx) and Bridget Hurley, MS (Director of R&D, Abbott). Why do women rarely headline medtech conferences? Amy Belt pondered this question in the spring of 2009, looking out to a sea of navy blue blazers and calculating only 4% of the podium speakers at her three previous conferences were women. She was bothered that “it gave a visual that the experts were not women. That simply wasn’t true.” Read more
A Brief Glimpse Inside the Prolific Mind of ForSight Labs’ CEO/Founder
The Biodesign Alumni Association had the pleasure of dining with Angela Macfarlane at the October Tableside Chat. She has spent time with some of the fundamental medical device innovators, from Tom Fogarty, to ExploraMed, to The Foundry. She is currently the CEO of ForSight Labs, an ophthalmology incubator, that she helped to create with Eugene de Juan, Jr. MD and The Foundry in 2005. ForSight Labs has spun out 5 companies over the last 6 years, each focused on a key clinical need in ophthalmology, including device and drug-device combinations. Read more
14th Annual Thomas Fogarty Lecture: Focus on Innovation (Nov 9th, 2012)
Ginger Graham delivered the 14th Annual Thomas Fogarty lecture this year, focusing on changing landscape in healthcare innovation. Ms. Graham is the current President and CEO of Two Trees Consulting, the former President and CEO of Amylin Pharmaceuticals and the past Group Chairman of Guidant Corporation. She also serves on several boards such as Proteus Digital Health, Genomic Health and Walgreens. With her extensive experience in both the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, Ms. Graham gave a thought-provoking talk that challenged conventional views on healthcare innovation. Read more
